NOTE: The cost of speed (in inflation-adjusted dollars) is a key measure of merit in the worlds of both transportation and computing machines. Once human “computers” were replaced by electrical, electronic, and then Cloud computers, the world saw a one-trillion-fold rise in speed (computations per second) of compute service that could be accessed per dollar (see Figure 3.2). A similar, if less dramatic, trend is visible in machines used to transport people (and goods). The speed (feet per hour) of transportation service available per dollar (of a passenger’s fare) has increased almost ten-thousand-fold since muscle and wind were replaced by combustion-centric travel. While the world awaits breakthroughs that make rocket-level velocities affordable, expected drone fares (air taxis) will extend history’s long-run chase for affordable speed.
